Mother of All Excuses
And How and Why to Avoid Them |

| Enhanced Lifestyle Enthusiasts!
Thank you for forwarding this email to friends, family and associates.
Just this morning I ran into a gentleman at the Zoo Health Club on Fort Lauderdale Beach. I was in the process of making notes in my journal when I hear from behind me, "Hey, it's the Health Colonel." He didn't know me. He just read the back of my shirt. So I turn around and introduce myself and we start talking about health and fitness. After discussing the importance of health, he said, "Some people just don't have the time. A mother with three small children is just not going to have the time."
I got excited! The gentleman just made a very thought provoking statement which got my mental wheels churning.
Here's what this gentleman provoked me to say: Everyone has the time. Everyone does NOT have the time to go to the gym or wherever they think they need to go to exercise. The KEY is to incorporate your environment into your exercise plan. Boy, could I think of some movement activities that could be undertaken with 3 small children! Wherever the mother is with those three small children, there are opportunities to move the body whether it be on the living room floor, in the bedroom, in a park, in the front or back yard. The idea of movement and moving the body becomes a part of a life philosophy. Seek movement of the body and be on the lookout for movement opportunities instead sedentary activities.
This is a great story because I am going to share with you an excerpt from my audio book script where I talk about excuses and how to deal with them.

| Mother of All Excuses? How to Achieve Lasting Results in Your Weight Management Struggle
Mother of All Excuses; Can You Come Up With It?
Is it any surprise that I put the excuses "department" at the top of the list? No! Of course not! Let's get right to the issue!
I'm here to tell you that doing what you say to yourself and others has a greater impact on your life than you could ever imagine. We are creatures of habit and all our habits, both negative and positive, make up our lifestyle--how we live both in the workplace and at home. Truth, honesty and integrity impact the quality of your life from eating to exercise to your relationships.
Living a life filled with culturally acceptable untruths is harmful to your health. OK, OK, I mean lies. But you and I know that when a fib is not serious, we tend to call it something less than a lie, an exaggeration perhaps--or an excuse. Here are some examples:
"Suzy, did you do your homework last night?" "Yes, mom, I did it while watching TV." Suzy didn't even crack a book. But she didn't totally lie. She did watch TV.
"Hey Sam, how big was that fish you caught the other day?" "Oh, man, you should have seen it. It was at least a 30-pounder." Yes, one that weighed about 10 pounds!
"Marilyn, have you been going to the gym regularly like you promised?" "Well, yes, I've been going." Yes, she's been going all right--going right past it on her way to the donut shop.
Some people think these are harmless examples, but they're not! How we respond in so-called harmless situations are the precursor of our responses when it really does count. When we exaggerate or make excuses, we are building a habit of not telling the truth AND we are programming our own behavior so that it becomes more difficult to even tell the truth. Sometimes we even redefine "truth" so that even the term itself loses its meaning.
Then we become experts in creating excuses for why we can't do what we recognize to be important. Boy, does that sound like a paradox! Imagine that! Finding and creating excuses for not doing what you have recognized to be important in your life. Just the other day, I had a conversation with a gentleman. We'll call him Mike. The conversation went like this, "Mike, how important is your health to you on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most important?"
Mike responded without hesitation, "My health is one of the most important things in my life. I give it 10 points."
"Well, Mike," I asked, "how often do you exercise each week?" Mike answered reluctantly, "I don't really have the time to exercise."
"Wait a minute," I said. "Let me get this straight. You just told me that your health is one of the most important things in your life, but your actions don't correspond. Explain that for me." He could not.
Of course, a lot of training goes into making excuses, and people spend time carefully thinking of plausible ones. There are even several websites devoted to the art of making excuses. I just looked at one called "The Mother of All Excuses." You can read or submit excuses for not going to work, skipping school, speeding or running a red light, having an accident, breaking dates, missing church, and more!
Some other excuse-generating websites are The Random Excuse Generator. IShouldBeWorking.com and Sickday Excuse Generator. And listen to some of the excuses listed there:
First the school excuses:
- I won't be in today. My fish is sick and I need to take it to the vet.
- My neighbor's daughter got a round hair brush stuck in her hair and I need to help her get it out.
- Please excuse Tommy for being absent yesterday. He had diarrhea and his boots leak.
- I didn't come to school yesterday because I was feeling like I was going to be sick, but thankfully I wasn't!
Some dating excuses:
- I would love to go out with you, but I need to ask my fiancé, and I don't think he would like that very much.
- I gained 5 pounds this week, and I really don't want you to see me like this.
Now listen to some excuses for not exercising:
- My workout clothes don't match.
- My cat's depressed.
- It's a bad hair day.
- I didn't shave my legs.
- Somebody was using my treadmill.
And here are some excuses for not eating healthy. Listen to this!
- Eating right costs too much.
- I can't fit in the recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
- I don't have time to eat right.
- My sweet tooth rules, so I can't eat well.
- I enjoy fast food too much to eat right.
- It doesn't matter that I have a lousy diet, because I take a vitamin pill.
- I eat too much to ever be able to eat right.
Watching Your Excuses means doing what you say you are going to do, following through with the right thing. It's about personal accountability. Excuses are a practiced form of giving up control to external circumstances or people. Taking charge of your life means focusing on what you can do-- possibilities talk. Excuses are impossibilities talk. If you have recognized that weight management, healthy eating and regular exercise are a priority for you, but you practice impossibilities talk by programming yourself through excuses, you have made it impossible to succeed in this area. You have created a barrier to positive change. You are not walking your talk.
Have the courage to take that positive first step in the direction you have recognized is best for you. Once you have recognized what is really important for your life in the long term and you are totally convinced that it is the right thing, pursue it like your life depended on it, because it does! Eliminate or - as I say - excusinate all excuses.
Finally, write down one excuse about your health that you will stop using and the positive, empowering statement you will replace it with. For instance, instead of "I'm too tired or I'm too busy or it's a bad hair day," use Possibilities Talk: "I will seek out healthy choices, whether I'm grocery shopping, picnicking, partying or dining out. I will rearrange my weekly schedule and plan to make exercising 4 to 6 times a week a part of my life, and I will follow through." |
